More Information
"Our final concert of this season, on May 28th, has a blueprint of cosmology. The program highlights composers Alexander Scriabin and Karlheinz Stockhausen, as well as jazz visionary Sun Ra. Scriabin, who was fascinated by theosophy and the occult, composed works that often feature an overwhelming ecstasy met with an apocalyptic end, particularly those he composed toward the end of his life. Stockhausen and Sun Ra both claimed to have been to other planets (Stockhausen said he was educated in the Sirius star system, and Sun Ra took a trip to Saturn early in his life), and their music does reflect their cosmological influences sonically, though in very different ways. For Stockhausen, the overarching struggle between order and chaos, a significant physical element in our universe’s birth and existence, can be represented musically. Similarly, Sun Ra’s music also incorporated both complex polyrhythms and logical structures, alongside more chaotic sections of free improvisation. Scriabin, Stockhausen, and Sun Ra were determined to create unearthly sounds, and these sounds can have a hypnotic effect on those courageous enough to listen." - Blueprinpts Piano Series
